Black Sangria Halloween Punch

Toast to All Hallows Eve with Refreshing Black Sangria

Black Sangria is a delicious blend of red wine and black tea, with a sweet yet earthy flavor. Dark red fruits, including cherries, berries, and black grapes, provide the sweetness. A touch of fresh lemon offers a tart counterpart.

My version of Black Sangria calls for more tea than most recipes. What's nice about this recipe is that it never turns out the same way twice. The blend can be varied in many ways depending on the type of wine that is used. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon work especially well, but you may choose any red table wine, or even grape juice for an alcohol-free version. Although the recipe calls for black tea, any flavor of brewed tea may be used, including vanilla, ginger, and fruit-flavored varieties.

Speaking of alcohol-free party beverages, Halloween is the perfect time to serve a cauldron of sparkling Black Halloween Punch. My version of the recipe is included here, since the ingredients are very similar to those of Black Sangria. Traditionally, Black Halloween Punch calls for water, but decaf herb tea adds more flavor and tones down the sweetness of the soft drink mixes and sugar.

What do you get when you cross orange and purple Kool-Aid? While the blend of orange and grape soft drink mixes does not yield a truly black mixture, the added color from the tea will make your Black Halloween Punch very dark indeed.

For extra fun at your Halloween party, be sure to include a few floating eyeballs in the punch bowl. Instead of ice cubes, try an eerie floating hand. If you're planning to serve beverages under a black light, a tonic water hand will glow in the dark. Share your own Black Sangria and Black Halloween Punch recipes and serving suggestions below.
