Black Cat Wine and the Zeller Schwarze Katz Legend

Zeller Schwarze Katz wines have enjoyed an international reputation for quite some time. In winery circles the black cat is a well known icon, often seen on the labels of German wines produced in the village of Zell along Germany's Mosel River.

The black cat is typically shown with its back arched, and has become an internationally known marketing logo for wines produced in the Zell region.

According to legend, a black cat aggressively guarded a barrel of Zeller wine that was cellared alongside many other wine barrels. The locals and wine merchants presumed that the Zeller wine was special, and the story lived on.

Romans are credited for the development of viniculture in ancient Germany and were responsible for establishing a winemaking region in the village of Zell. Mosel is the most famous of the 13 Qualitatswein (quality wine) regions in Germany, and is also the third largest producer of wines.

Riesling-blend Zeller Schwarze Katz wines offer value and quality at a reasonable price. The wines are fairly popular in Germany and are also exported to many markets throughout the world. I've been collecting black cat items for many years, and have built up quite a collection of Zeller Schwarze Katz wine bottles, including a few vintage wine bottles.

A Village in Germany

The village of Zell is located on the Mosel River near the French border. Although many wines are produced in this region, Zeller Schwarze Katz, or “black cat” wines are the most famous and sought after by collectors.

A Zeller Schwarze Katz wine is easy to spot—just look for a playful, often arched black cat on the wine label. Some of the Zeller Schwarze Katz wines I’ve purchased have featured a black cat ornament hanging on the neck of the bottle.

The Riesling-blend wine is light, crisp and refreshing. Enjoy it as the Germans do, as an everyday wine with the main mid-day meal, during weekend family gatherings, or in the evening paired with light foods.

Most people associate Germany with beer, but the German wine industry is large and highly successful worldwide.

A Municipality in the District Cochem-Zell, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany

The German village of Zell is well known for its reasonably priced, everyday white Riesling wines, including Zeller Schwarze Katz. Zell an der Mosel is acclaimed worldwide for its vineyards, traditionally dominated by Riesling grapes. Zell is one of the biggest winegrowing centers in the Mosel wine region, behind only Piesport.

The Zeller Schwarze Katz brand has been a boost to tourism, which is another important source of income for the region. The Frankfurt-Hahn Airport is less than an hour’s drive away.

The red cross on the coat of arms refers to Zell’s historical relation with the Archbishop of Trier and the Elector of Trier. The keys are Saint Peter’s attribute, representing the town’s and the church’s patron saint.

German Rhein Wine Roemer Goblets
"Römer" or Roemer Glass is a traditional German wine glass, commonly used to serve sweet wines from the Rhine or Moselle Region. These unique glasses feature a green-colored stem, topped by a clear bowl etched with vines or grapes. Fancier versions of these popular glasses are accented with a beautiful gold rim.

Here's one of my favorite wine labels. In an atypical non-arched pose, this black cat is relaxing and enjoying a glass of German Riesling-blend wine in a traditional green-stemmed Roemer goblet.

FIV Cat Rescue
We work hard to stop discriminatory FIV+ killing, to support those of us who help FIV+ cats, and to create a healthy, humane, and permanent solution for all cats.

FIV Cat Rescue
I'm promoting this organization in memory of Pywacket, my rescued black cat who was FIV positive. After joining our family, Pywacket lived a relatively normal life alongside our other cats who were never infected with the virus. My veterinarian was informed about FIV and did not recommend ending Pywacket's life. FIV is not a death sentence. Please help spread the word!
